Lionel Messi Scores First Goal Since His Father’s Death
Lionel Messi scored a goal for Inter Miami in their MLS match against Philadelphia Union on Wednesday, marking his first goal since his father’s death. The 39-year-old had traveled to Argentina for his father’s funeral after Jorge Messi passed away on August 8 at the age of 68.
Messi returned to action and played in Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup match against Leon as a second-half substitute. In their MLS game against Nashville on August 15, he missed a penalty but still contributed an assist as Inter Miami lost 4-1.
Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos noted that Messi appeared at peace following his father’s passing. “He looks good and is expressing himself on the pitch,” Hoyos said during a press conference.
Jorge Messi played a key role in his son’s career, particularly in arranging his move to Barcelona in 2000. His death was a significant loss for Messi, who had previously expressed deep reliance on his father’s guidance. Following the news of his father’s passing, Messi hinted at considering retirement.
In their recent match against Philadelphia Union, Inter Miami and Philadelphia Union ended in a 2-2 draw. This marked Inter Miami’s fourth consecutive winless game. Their next MLS match is against Toronto on August 19.
