Manchester City Wins 5-0 with Samba’s Double
Manchester City began their Carabao Cup title defence in impressive fashion, defeating Norwich City 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium. Floyd Samba scored twice on his senior debut, while Rayan Cherki, Allan and Ryan McAidoo also found the net as City comfortably moved into the next round.
City manager Enzo Maresca made 10 changes to the team that had defeated Manchester United earlier in the week. The rotation gave several players an opportunity to make an impression, including goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli and winger Allan, who made their debuts for the club.
One of the biggest highlights of the match was the performance of 17-year-old academy midfielder Floyd Samba. The youngster opened the scoring in the 29th minute when he headed the ball into the net, giving City the lead and marking an impressive start to his senior career.
Norwich managed to keep City from adding to their lead for much of the first half. Although the hosts controlled possession, they found it difficult to create clear chances against a well-organised Norwich defence.
City eventually doubled their advantage before half-time. Samba played a key role in the move, setting up Rayan Cherki, who finished the opportunity to make it 2-0.
Allan then scored shortly after the restart to make it 3-0. The goal made his City debut even more memorable and gave the home side a comfortable advantage going into the second half.
Samba completed his impressive debut with a second goal midway through the second half. He took advantage of a mistake by the Norwich defence and finished the chance to put City four goals ahead.
City continued to control the match as Norwich struggled to create serious problems for Rulli. The visitors rarely threatened the City goal, while the home side maintained more than 65 per cent possession and kept a clean sheet.
Ryan McAidoo added a fifth goal in the closing moments to complete a convincing victory. The result sent City into the next round, where they will face Brighton at home.
The performance also highlighted the depth available to Maresca. With several regular starters rested, younger and less experienced players were given valuable playing time and responded with a strong display.
Samba’s two-goal performance was particularly encouraging for City. The 17-year-old showed confidence and finishing ability while making his first senior appearance, giving the club another promising attacking option from its academy.
Manchester City will now turn their attention back to the Premier League, with Sunderland their next opponent on Sunday. The team will also begin preparing for their Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton.
Maresca has stressed that cup matches can be difficult because of the changes made to team selections and the unpredictable nature of knockout football. City, however, made a strong start to their title defence and will continue their campaign with confidence.
