Michael Hussey Consider Joining England as Batting Coach Under Stephen Fleming
Former Australian batter Michael Hussey has expressed openness to joining England’s Test team as a batting coach. His interest comes after New Zealand’s Stephen Fleming was appointed as England’s head coach recently.
Hussey and Fleming have a long history together, having worked with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL. They were part of CSK’s squad in 2008 but lost to Rajasthan Royals in the final. Fleming became CSK’s head coach in 2009 until 2026, excluding years when the team was banned. Hussey played for CSK from 2008 to 2013 before joining Mumbai Indians and returning for one season in 2015.
When asked about the opportunity, Hussey said he would not immediately rule anything out. He enjoys coaching and helping players improve, regardless of their nationality. While it might feel odd coaching England against Australia in an Ashes series, he emphasized focusing on his role rather than viewing it as playing against a team.
Hussey also mentioned that family time is a significant consideration for him. He plans to take his time making any decision, especially since he has a close relationship with Fleming.
A experienced player, Hussey played 79 Tests, 185 ODIs, and 38 T20Is between 2004 and 2013, scoring over 6,000 runs in Tests. In the IPL, he scored 1,977 runs across 59 matches.
