Netherlands Beat India to Halt Their Semi-Final Hopes

India’s winning streak in the 2026 FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup ended on Friday as they lost 2-0 to co-hosts Netherlands in their Pool E match in Amstelveen. The Netherlands secured six points from two matches and advanced to the semi-finals.

The match was part of both teams’ second-round campaigns. The Netherlands played more effectively, constantly troubling India’s defense. Yibbi Jansen and Frederique Matla scored the goals for the Netherlands, each converting penalty corners. Jansen scored in the second minute after the Dutch earned their first penalty corner, giving them an early lead.

India struggled to maintain possession and often had to defend. Goalkeeper Bichu Devi made crucial saves, including denying Jansen’s drag-flick and keeping another shot from hitting the back of the net. Despite India’s defensive efforts, they couldn’t prevent the Netherlands from dominating play.

The second half began with the Netherlands still in control. In the 38th minute, Matla scored her goal from another penalty corner, making it 2-0. This put more pressure on India, who tried to push forward but struggled to create clear chances. Salima Tete had a close opportunity but couldn’t convert due to strong Dutch defense.

India’s inability to maintain possession limited their attacking threats. The Netherlands goalkeeper, Anne Veenendaal, made key saves to keep the scoreline intact. India remains in fourth place in Pool E with one point and faces Australia on Sunday. A loss could end their semi-final hopes.
