NHRC Takes Cognisance of Manipur Gunfight, Seeks Report on 13 Deaths

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reacted to media reports of a deadly gunfight in Manipur, where at least 13 people were killed in a clash between rival armed groups on December 4. Taking suo motu cognizance, the NHRC issued notices to Manipur’s Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.

The Commission expressed deep concern, stating that if the media reports were accurate, it signifies a serious human rights violation and a potential lapse by law enforcement agencies. The report should include the status of the police FIR and measures taken by the state government to prevent such incidents in the future.

The NHRC emphasized the alarming loss of 13 lives in an area that had maintained calm since tensions arose in Manipur in May. The Commission highlighted the state’s duty to protect its citizens and urged efforts to foster unity and brotherliness among communities. The NHRC has been actively addressing complaints related to human rights violations in Manipur since May, acknowledging the need for thorough consideration of the situation.
