Opposition Walks Out Over Repeal of Muslim Marriages Act
In a display of protest, the Opposition Congress and AIUDF staged walkouts from the Assam Assembly, denouncing the State Cabinet’s decision to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935. The AIUDF’s attempt to discuss the Cabinet decision via an adjournment motion was rebuffed by Speaker Biswajit Daimary.
While the Congress argued for amendments rather than a complete repeal, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma defended the move as a measure to combat child marriage in the state. Sarma’s steadfast stance, asserting his commitment to eradicating child marriage, prompted the opposition’s dramatic exit from the assembly session, with the AIUDF initially resorting to slogans and subsequent physical demonstration before leaving the proceedings altogether.
