Orioles Edge Marlins with Ninth-Inning Rally
MIAMI (AP) — Adley Rutschman delivered a go-ahead pinch-hit single in the ninth inning, and Leody Taveras added a run-scoring hit to help the Baltimore Orioles defeat the Miami Marlins 9-7 on Tuesday night. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for Baltimore.
Rutschman replaced Samuel Basallo, who had multiple hits earlier, to face left-handed pitcher Andrew Nardi. Rutschman’s liner scored Taylor Ward from second. Taveras then hit a single that drove in Pete Alonso, who had reached on walks along with Ward.
Basallo was the Orioles’ top performer, driving in four runs and scoring four times. Rico García earned the win by pitching the final four outs.
Liam Hicks led the Marlins with a home run and three singles, giving him three RBIs.
In the eighth inning, Marlins rookie Joe Mack singled against Andrew Kittredge. After Ruíz pinch-ran for Mack, he advanced on Owen Caissie’s walk and stole third. Ruíz scored on a throwing error by Orioles catcher Basallo, tying the game at 7-7.
Earlier, Basallo hit an RBI triple and scored on Colton Cowser’s fielder’s choice in the fifth inning to make it 7-4 and force out Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara.
The Marlins briefly tied the game in the seventh with consecutive home runs by Hicks and Otto López against Orioles reliever Anthony Nuñez.
In his shortest outing of the season, Alcantara allowed seven runs and eight hits over 4 1/3 innings while striking out five.
Hicks’ two-RBI single in the second inning tied the game at 3-3 after the Orioles scored three runs in the first. Alonso put Baltimore ahead with a two-run double and scored on Basallo’s double.
Miami had chipped away in the bottom half against Orioles starter Chris Bassitt, who allowed four runs and six hits in four innings.
Marlins reliever William Kempner pitched a perfect eighth inning during his major league debut.
The Orioles’ Brandon Young will start Wednesday against Marlins’ Eury Pérez.
