Vijay Seeks Congress Help for Secular Government in Tamil Nadu
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay, who won 108 seats in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, has reached out to the Congress party for help in forming a government. Although he is the single largest party, Vijay lacks a majority in the 234-seat Assembly. The Congress, part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, hinted it might support him.
In New Delhi, All India Congress Committee general secretary K.C. Venugopal confirmed that TVK has formally requested Congress backing. Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is expected to resign soon, allowing a new government to form in his state.
In Kerala, discussions about forming a new government have started after the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) won the election. Pinarayi Vijayan, who resigned as Chief Minister, will likely address the media after meeting with party leaders.
