Police Officer Shoots Pregnant Wife Amid Dowry Dispute in Uttar Pradesh

In a shocking incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district, a Sub-Inspector identified as Shashank Mishra allegedly shot his pregnant wife, Shalini, with his service pistol amid an alleged dowry dispute. Mishra, who serves as the Bangra outpost in charge, fired three bullets, with two hitting Shalini’s hand and one grazing her stomach. The injured woman was promptly admitted to a medical college for treatment. Upon learning of the incident, authorities took Mishra into custody and suspended him, with ongoing interrogation.

The police have characterized the incident as a family dispute, with Shalini’s in-laws accusing the inspector of dowry harassment. Shalini recounted that the altercation began after Mishra returned home late from visiting his mother and brother, leading to a heated argument during which he retrieved his pistol from a cupboard and opened fire.

She managed to escape into another room, but the shooting continued. Eventually, Mishra threatened to shoot himself but was disarmed by neighbors who intervened. Jhansi’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Rajesh S., affirmed that the incident is primarily a family dispute, and an FIR has been filed in this regard.
