Prisoner Escapes from Puzhal Women’s Prison; Warders Suspended for Negligence

In a startling incident, a 32-year-old remand prisoner, A Jayanthi, detained under the Goondas Act and housed at the Special Prison for Women in Puzhal, escaped on Wednesday afternoon while being escorted by two female warders to clean the visitors’ room. Jayanthi, originally from Bengaluru, had a history of thefts and robberies, leading to her recent arrest in connection with theft cases.

The Department of Prisons and Correctional Services swiftly conducted a preliminary inquiry and suspended two warders, Kanagalakshmi (Grade I) and Kokila (Grade II), for negligence and dereliction of duty. Special teams from Puzhal police are now actively engaged in efforts to trace the escaped prisoner. The escape raises concerns about security measures within the women’s prison, prompting authorities to take prompt action against the responsible warders.
