Rampant Use of Single-Use Plastic Despite Ban in Tirupati

Despite a ban on single-use plastic imposed in Tirupati as early as 2018, the issue of its widespread usage and indiscriminate disposal has once again come to the forefront. The new Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT), Aditi Singh, personally witnessed the problem during her inspection of various wards in the city.

Despite being the first city to implement the ban on plastic covers, glasses, and cups, plastic has resurfaced in various forms over time. During her inspection, Ms. Singh encountered dumps of plastic waste, prompting her to take immediate action. She fined establishments found guilty of dumping plastic waste on the streets, signaling a zero-tolerance policy towards the possession, sale, and use of single-use plastic products. Ms. Singh also urged residents to discourage the use of such products in the interest of environmental preservation.
