Record Single-Day Rainfall in Parts of North Tamil Nadu in January

Some areas in north Tamil Nadu witnessed heavy rainfall, breaking records for a single day in January. Puducherry experienced its highest 24-hour rainfall of nearly 13 cm, surpassing the previous record set on January 4, 1985. Nagapattinam recorded its second-highest single-day 24-hour rainfall of 21 cm, with the highest registered on January 13, 1923.

Cuddalore received the third-highest rainfall in one day in January, recording 13.6 cm, while Sirkali registered nearly 24 cm. The Regional Meteorological Centre predicts the rain spell to shift towards south Tamil Nadu from Tuesday, particularly in Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Kanniyakumari, and Thoothukudi districts until January 11.

The sustained Northeast monsoon conditions in January result from a combination of global weather patterns, local conditions, and factors like El Nino and positive Indian Ocean Dipole.
