Simpler Path to Permanent Residency for UK Social Care Workers

The United Kingdom government has announced changes to its immigration rules, making it easier for some foreign social care workers to apply for permanent residency. Under the revised policy, eligible workers who arrived in the UK before May 2025 can apply for permanent residency after five years instead of the previously proposed 15 years.

The new rules also provide faster opportunities for workers earning higher salaries. Those earning more than £50,271 annually can apply for permanent residency after five years. Workers earning over £125,140 a year may qualify after just three years.

The changes are expected to benefit thousands of Indian workers who moved to the UK under the Health and Care Worker visa scheme, which operated from October 2020 to July 2025. Many workers, particularly those from Kerala, have reportedly faced difficulties such as unpaid wages, exploitation, and unfair treatment by employers.

Under the revised rules, eligible social and home care workers earning at least £25,000 annually can apply for permanent residency after five years. The changes are also expected to provide another opportunity for workers who previously struggled to meet certain visa requirements.

The UK Home Secretary said that the government had already revoked the licences of more than 1,800 employers accused of exploiting foreign workers. Authorities are also helping affected workers find legitimate employment opportunities in the care sector.

The policy changes followed pressure from the Labour Party, health unions, and other organisations. The government also received more than 202,000 responses during a public consultation, with most responses reportedly coming from visa holders.

Initially, the government had proposed increasing the waiting period for permanent residency. However, the proposal faced criticism from workers, unions, and other groups. Following these concerns, the government revised its plans and introduced the updated rules.

Other low-income workers will now generally be able to apply for permanent residency after 10 years instead of 15 years. Refugees and people who entered the UK illegally may face longer waiting periods, depending on their individual circumstances.

The revised policy comes amid ongoing debates about immigration, worker rights, and the number of people entering the UK. The government aims to balance immigration control with fair treatment for foreign workers who contribute to essential services.

The changes could provide greater stability for eligible care workers and their families while allowing them to plan their future in the UK with more confidence.
