Tamil Nadu Auto Fares Increase to Rs 50

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a major increase in auto-rickshaw fares, raising the minimum fare from Rs 25 to Rs 50. This is the first official fare revision in 13 years. The new decision changes the existing fare system, which had remained the same for more than a decade.

The government officially announced the revised fare structure through a government gazette on October 27. The announcement includes changes to the minimum fare and special charges for passengers travelling at night and during the early morning hours.

Under the new rules, passengers travelling between 10 pm and 5 am will have to pay 1.5 times the regular fare. This means that people using auto-rickshaws during these hours will pay more than those travelling during the daytime. The higher charge applies to journeys made during the specified night-time period.

The fare increase is expected to affect many people across Tamil Nadu, especially in cities where auto-rickshaws are a common mode of transport. Office workers, students, senior citizens and daily commuters often depend on autos to travel to bus stops, railway stations, workplaces and other destinations. The increase in the minimum fare may raise their daily travel expenses, particularly for short-distance journeys.

Auto drivers have also faced rising expenses over the years. Fuel prices, vehicle repairs, spare parts and regular maintenance can increase the cost of operating an auto-rickshaw. Drivers must also manage other expenses while providing transport services to passengers. The revised fares are intended to update the fare structure after many years without an official increase.

However, the higher fares may create difficulties for passengers who use autos regularly because they may need to spend more money on transportation. People who travel several times a day could face a greater increase in their monthly travel costs. The additional night-time charge may also affect employees who work late shifts or return home after midnight.

The revised fare structure has brought the issue of affordable public transport into focus. While drivers face rising operating costs, passengers also depend on reasonably priced transport for their daily needs. Balancing these two concerns remains important for the state’s transport system.

The announcement marks a major change in Tamil Nadu’s auto-rickshaw fare system after 13 years. Both drivers and passengers will need to understand the revised rules and the charges that apply to their journeys. The impact of the new fares will become clearer as people begin to experience the changes in their daily travel.
