Ukraine Allocates Over $28 Billion for Defense in 2023

Ukraine’s government has dedicated more than $28 billion to cover the country’s defense needs in 2023, as the conflict with Russia continues, according to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. A significant portion, approximately $18.66 billion, was allocated for military personnel salaries, with around $9.55 billion designated for the purchase of military equipment, armor, ammunition, and other defense industry products.

Shmyhal noted that the defense sector was Ukraine’s top budget priority in the first nine months of the year, followed by social programs and healthcare. In 2024, Ukraine plans to allocate a substantial portion of its budget, at least $46 billion or 21.6% of its GDP, for defense and security forces, demonstrating the country’s commitment to its security needs.
