U.S. Approves Sale of Support Services for Apache Helicopters and M777A2 Howitzers

The United States Department of State has approved possible military support deals for India involving Apache attack helicopters and M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. The agreements are part of efforts to strengthen defense cooperation between the United States and India.

According to the announcement, the support package for the Apache helicopters is estimated to cost about $198.2 million, while the deal for the M777A2 howitzers is valued at around $230 million. These are not new weapons purchases but support and maintenance packages meant to keep India’s existing systems ready for operation.

The Apache helicopter support package will be handled by Boeing and Lockheed Martin. The deal includes spare parts, maintenance support, technical documents, training, software assistance, and logistics services needed for the helicopters.

The M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzer support package will be managed by BAE Systems, based in Cumbria in the United Kingdom. India has requested continued support for the artillery system, including repair services, spare equipment, technical assistance, and training for military personnel.

The Apache helicopter is one of the world’s most advanced attack helicopters and is used for combat operations, surveillance, and battlefield support. The M777A2 howitzer is a lightweight artillery gun known for its long-range firepower and mobility, especially in difficult terrains such as mountainous regions.

These defense deals are being carried out under the Foreign Military Sales program of the United States. Officials said the agreements are meant to improve India’s military readiness and help the country face current and future security challenges.

The U.S. government also stated that the deals would strengthen the growing strategic partnership between Washington and New Delhi. In recent years, India and the United States have increased cooperation in defense, technology, and regional security matters.

American officials added that the support agreements would not affect the military balance in the region and would not reduce the defense preparedness of the United States.
