World Bank Launches Digital Strategy
The World Bank has introduced its first major digital strategy, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI), improved internet access, and job creation in developing countries. The plan aims to help countries use modern technology to improve productivity, strengthen public services, and create more employment opportunities.
The strategy was announced in Seoul. World Bank President Ajay Banga highlighted the importance of using practical and affordable technology, especially AI tools, to support economic growth. He stressed that digital solutions can help countries improve the way public services are delivered and make important services more accessible to people.
The new strategy will focus on several key sectors, including infrastructure, energy, agriculture, healthcare, tourism, and manufacturing. By using digital technology in these areas, developing countries could improve efficiency, support businesses, and create new job opportunities.
The World Bank also plans to encourage cooperation between governments and private companies. This approach aims to improve access to digital tools, expand internet connectivity, and help more people benefit from technological development. Affordable AI solutions could also help small businesses and public institutions work more efficiently.
Job creation is one of the main goals of the initiative. Over the next decade, around 1.2 billion young people are expected to enter the workforce in developing countries. Providing enough jobs for this growing population will be a major challenge. The strategy aims to help countries prepare young people for changing workplace needs and create new opportunities through digital development.
However, access to the internet remains a major problem in many parts of the world. More than two billion people were still without internet access by 2025, according to the figures cited in the report. People without reliable connectivity may miss out on online education, digital services, business opportunities, and jobs that require technology skills.
The World Bank’s strategy aims to reduce this digital divide by expanding connectivity and supporting the use of technology. Better internet access could help people in rural and underserved areas access information, learn new skills, and take part in the digital economy.
The success of the plan will depend on how effectively countries introduce these technologies, improve internet access, and ensure that workers have the skills needed for new jobs. Making digital tools affordable and accessible will also be important.
Through this initiative, the World Bank hopes to help developing countries use technology to support economic growth, improve public services, and create more employment opportunities for the next generation.
