The Journey of Lion Cub Kio

A new documentary called Lion follows the life of a young lion cub named Kio in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. The film shows how Kio grows up and becomes a king of lions, facing many challenges along the way.

Kio encounters dangers like buffalo, hyenas, people, other lions, and even fire. He also experiences exile, brotherhood, loss, and triumph. A team of filmmakers, including Kenyan locals, followed Kio and his pride for four years, recording over 1,400 hours of footage during 52 shoots.

Creating this documentary was risky because only half of lion cubs survive to adulthood. When the crew left Kio’s area, they weren’t sure if he would survive the rainy seasons. “I was always waiting for that phone call,” said Jon Favreau, director of The Lion King, who worked on the project with BBC Studios.

Unlike The Lion King, which was made using digital effects, this film relied on real-life footage. The team used only music and editing to tell Kio’s story, without changing or controlling the events.

The documentary features stunning cinematography of Kenya’s landscapes—beautiful sunsets, starry skies, and marshlands that look like paradise. Hans Zimmer’s emotional score adds depth to the visuals.

Filmmakers used stabilized cameras on trucks to film Kio at eye level, creating a deeper emotional connection with the audience. This approach helped viewers feel more connected to Kio’s journey.
