Turkey Berry Farming Boosts Krishnagiri Farmers’ Income

The small sundakkai, also known as Turkey berry, which is commonly used in dishes like vathal kuzhambu, is now creating new income opportunities for farmers in Krishnagiri district.

This small and bitter berry has turned profitable for many farmers as they have started exporting it to countries such as Malaysia and Singapore. The demand for Turkey berry is also growing in nearby states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

Farmers say the berry is popular because it is healthy and has many medicinal benefits. It is rich in nutrients and is widely used in traditional cooking and home remedies. Due to this, more buyers are looking for fresh and dried Turkey berries.

Many farmers grow Turkey berry as an intercrop along with spinach, coriander and other vegetables. Since it grows easily and needs less care, it does not affect the main crops. Instead, it gives farmers extra income from the same piece of land.

They say the plant gives a good yield and regular harvests. Compared to some other crops, Turkey berry farming costs less but brings better returns. This has made farmers happy and encouraged more people to cultivate it.

With rising demand from both local and international markets, Turkey berry is slowly becoming an important cash crop for farmers in Krishnagiri, helping improve their earnings and livelihoods.
