EU Labels Iran’s Revolutionary Guard a Terrorist Group
The European Union (EU) has declared Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a terrorist organisation. The decision was taken because of the government’s harsh action against people protesting across the country.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said all 27 member countries agreed on this decision. She said the Iranian government’s treatment of its own people is unacceptable.
Kallas added that any government that kills thousands of its own citizens is damaging itself. She said the IRGC will now be treated like other terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda, Hamas and Daesh.
The EU has also placed sanctions on 15 Iranian officials, including top commanders of the Revolutionary Guard. These sanctions may include travel bans and freezing of their assets.
Human rights groups say the crackdown on protests has been very violent. They claim that at least 6,373 people have been killed during the unrest.
Iran has not yet responded to the EU’s decision. However, it has criticised European countries in recent days for planning this move.
The United States and Canada have already declared the IRGC a terrorist organisation. With the EU’s decision, Iran is likely to face more pressure from the international community.
