China Vows Action After Panama Cancels Port Deal

Beijing said on Friday, January 30, 2026, that it will take “necessary measures” to protect the interests of its companies after Panama’s top court cancelled a port operating deal.

The court annulled a concession that allowed CK Hutchison, a Hong Kong-based company, to manage ports near the Panama Canal. The canal is one of the most important shipping routes in the world and plays a key role in global trade.

CK Hutchison said the court’s decision did not have a proper legal basis and questioned the ruling. The company has been operating the ports under the agreement for several years.

A Chinese government spokesman said that China will firmly protect the rights of its companies abroad and take all necessary steps to safeguard their interests.

The cancellation of the deal has raised concerns about business stability and foreign investments in Panama. Experts say it could affect trade operations and increase tensions between China and Panama.

The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and any changes to port operations there could affect global shipping and trade. China is closely monitoring the situation but has not announced specific actions yet.
