GCC Plans Pedestrian-Friendly Crossings Across Chennai

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has planned to develop more pedestrian-friendly crossings at major junctions and busy locations across the city. The aim of this initiative is to improve road safety and make it easier for people to cross roads, especially in areas where the number of pedestrians has increased in recent years.

Many junctions in Chennai experience heavy traffic throughout the day, and pedestrians often find it difficult and unsafe to cross the road. To address this issue, the GCC is planning to introduce better-designed pedestrian crossings in places where large numbers of people walk every day, such as near schools, markets, bus stops, railway stations, and commercial areas.

Pedestrian-friendly crossings may include clearly marked zebra crossings, better traffic signals, speed breakers near crossings, and proper signage to alert drivers. In some locations, officials may also consider installing pedestrian signals that allow people to cross the road safely when traffic stops.

Residents of the city have welcomed the move but have also urged the Corporation to carefully identify areas where road safety problems are serious. Many people say that several busy roads in Chennai still lack proper crossings, forcing pedestrians to cross in risky conditions. They have asked the authorities to conduct detailed studies to find accident-prone zones and take immediate steps to improve safety.

Civic groups and local residents have also requested that the GCC involve the public while planning the new road safety measures. They believe that feedback from people who use these roads daily can help officials understand the real problems faced by pedestrians.

Meanwhile, officials said that meetings related to the city’s new road safety policy are expected to be held in the coming days. During these discussions, different departments will review current traffic conditions, accident data, and suggestions from residents to decide where pedestrian-friendly crossings should be created first.

The initiative is part of a larger effort by the city administration to make Chennai’s roads safer for everyone, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. By improving crossings and road design, the GCC hopes to reduce accidents and encourage more people to walk safely in the city.
