Centre proposes new import gateways for drugs and medical devices
The Indian government’s health department has suggested adding 10 new inland container depots (ICDs), one special economic zone (SEZ), and an international airport to the list of approved entry points for importing drugs, medical devices, and cosmetics.
This change aims to make importing these products easier by reducing transportation distances and improving their movement across India. The proposed locations include:
– ICDs in Sonipat, Piyala, and Harsaru (Haryana)
– ICD Dadri (Uttar Pradesh)
– ICD Gandhidham/Mundra (Gujarat)
– ICDs Sanath Nagar and Thimmapur (Hyderabad, Telangana)
– ICD Whitefield (Bengaluru, Karnataka)
– SEZ Bommasandra (Karnataka)
– Noida International Airport (Uttar Pradesh)
These additions will support the existing network of import gateways, which includes ICDs in Dhannad and Tihi (Indore, Madhya Pradesh) and airports already approved for drug imports.
The new gateways are expected to help importers clear goods closer to their facilities, reducing transportation costs and delays. This should make importing healthcare products more efficient.
The government has invited feedback from stakeholders on this proposal. Responses can be sent to the Under Secretary (Drugs Regulation) or emailed to drugsdiv-mohfw@gov.in. The final decision will be made after reviewing all comments.
