Can Stormwater Drains Save Tambaram This Monsoon?

The Tambaram Corporation, which was formed by merging five municipalities and five special panchayats two years ago, is preparing to face the Northeast monsoon season for the first time. In anticipation of the monsoon, the corporation has established an extensive network of stormwater drains and has undertaken the desilting of existing drains based on previous flood patterns.

Approximately 80% of the stormwater drain construction in the five zones has already been completed, and remaining work is being expedited. With nearly ₹38 crore allocated by the Tamil Nadu government for flood-mitigation projects, the corporation aims to address flood concerns in areas such as Hasthinapuram, Nemillichery, Thiruneermalai, Madambakkam, Sembakkam, Chitlapakkam, and Selaiyur.
