Chennai Corporation’s Dog and Cow Catchers Seek Training and Job Permanency

Workers responsible for capturing stray dogs and cattle in Chennai under the jurisdiction of the Chennai Corporation have raised concerns about their job conditions and lack of formal training. They contend that their work is fraught with risks, as they often deal with unpredictable animal behavior, and have requested training and job permanency.

The workers use upgraded equipment like basket nets and safety gear but still face inherent dangers. Dog catchers also expressed frustration at not being made permanent employees and not receiving benefits like membership of the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF). Similarly, cow catchers are seeking job permanency and better conditions, emphasizing the need for formal training. Currently, the GCC has 75 dog catchers and 16 dog-catching vehicles, while there are 25 cow catchers in the city working under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM).
