Chennai Corporation Embraces Innovative Solutions for Monsoon Flood Mitigation

The Greater Chennai Corporation is gearing up for the monsoon season by adopting innovative and cost-effective flood mitigation measures. These initiatives come in response to Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena’s directive to explore fresh ideas for enhancing monsoon preparedness. The corporation has initiated flood mitigation projects that were long-delayed, incorporating novel approaches.

For instance, a project utilizing “push-through technology” has been launched to construct a culvert across four railway tracks near the Ganesapuram subway in north Chennai. This technology is expected to significantly reduce the construction time to just 45 days. Additionally, the use of natural geotextiles for embankment development and Vettiver planting for slope protection is being explored, along with the restoration of ponds in flood-prone areas.

The Corporation is also expanding its shutter and pumping systems to mitigate flooding in various parts of the city.
