F1 Returns to Miami with New Rules

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Formula 1 is back at the Miami Grand Prix after a five-week break caused by cancelations in the Middle East due to the war in Iran. This pause allowed the FIA to introduce new rules aimed at addressing driver concerns about how changes to battery power have affected car performance and competition.

Drivers like Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have criticized the current cars, with Verstappen even considering leaving F1 if improvements aren’t made. He hopes for “big, big changes” next year. The drivers’ feedback has been limited to simulator work so far, but they’ve expressed a desire for more involvement in the decision-making process.

The teams have used this time to update their cars ahead of Sunday’s race. However, many believe these upgrades won’t significantly alter the current standings. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc expects Mercedes, who currently lead, to remain dominant despite the changes.

Adding to the uncertainty is the weather forecast, which predicts heavy rain and thunderstorms on race day. Such conditions could disrupt the event, as safety protocols require stable weather for racing and medical helicopter operations. Drivers have described wet conditions as challenging and unpredictable.

The race will be a test of adaptability for both drivers and organizers, with the added threat of Florida’s notorious lightning risks.
