Fishing Community Plans to Form Political Party for 2026 Elections

Frustrated by a perceived lack of recognition from major political parties, the fishing community is organizing to establish its own political party and aims to contest the 2026 Assembly election. The initiative targets all 14 coastal districts and specific areas with a significant inland fishing population. The community leaders emphasize issues such as rising sea levels, which require urgent attention.

Pamphlets and posters inviting people for a brainstorming session are in circulation, and leaders from various districts are being summoned. The leaders express dissatisfaction with the treatment of traditional fishermen, citing challenges such as land classification and government takeovers of community leaders’ properties. While previous attempts to form political parties for the fishing community exist, leaders assert their commitment to substantial growth and garnering votes for their cause.
