Giant Tubes on Avvai Shanmugam Salai Cause Pedestrian Hindrance

Avvai Shanmugam Salai in Triplicane, Chennai, has witnessed an unusual sight with three massive tubes lying on the pavement for over a month, as of November 2. The tubes, extending from an excavation site and obstructing the sidewalk, have raised concerns among pedestrians, especially given the proximity of the Lady Willingdon Institute campus and the State Commissionerate for the Differently Abled.

The area caters to a significant volume of foot traffic and accessibility is crucial. The tubes were installed by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to facilitate water pumping from its Marina work site into the Greater Chennai Corporation’s (GCC) stormwater drain on Avvai Shanmugam Salai.

While acknowledging the hindrance, a GCC official stated that they would request CMRL to expedite the completion of this work, considering the inconveniences caused by the non-functional pavement.
