Government Doctors in Tamil Nadu Protest for Allowances Implementation

The Tamil Nadu Government Doctors’ Association (TNGDA) organized a sit-in protest at the Directorate of Medical Education and Research in Kilpauk, demanding the immediate implementation of Government Order (G.O.) 293, which grants allowances for doctors. The G.O., issued on June 18, 2021, has faced delays in enforcement due to opposition from a group of doctors, according to the government.

If implemented, this order would benefit nearly 15,000 doctors, with allowances increasing from ₹3,000 to ₹25,000 based on the doctors’ qualifications. Those working in challenging areas such as remote institutions, comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care centers, trauma units, and casualty units would also see benefits.

Arrears due from the date of the order, amounting to 26 months, would also be granted upon implementation. Around 75 doctors, including two women, were reportedly arrested for attempting to block Poonamallee High Road during the protest.
