Heavy Rains Affect Over 71,000 People in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is grappling with the consequences of heavy rain and subsequent flooding, with more than 71,000 people in 13 districts being adversely affected, according to the island nation’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC). The DMC reported that three individuals have lost their lives as a result of the floods and landslides.

These adverse conditions have arisen due to the activation of the southwest monsoon season, leading to continuous heavy rains in recent weeks. The National Building Research Organization has issued landslide warning notices for several districts, which were extended due to the ongoing rainy weather. The Department of Meteorology has forecast a decrease in rainfall for the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces over the next 48 hours.
