India Fourth in CWG 2026 Despite Missing Key Sports

India ended the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow with a fourth-place finish on the medals table. The country won 39 medals—13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze. Australia led the standings, followed by England and Canada.

This edition of the games was smaller than previous ones, featuring only 10 sports. Unlike past events, traditional medal-winning disciplines like wrestling and shooting were excluded. Other sports such as badminton, hockey, table tennis, cricket, and squash were also left out, reducing India’s chances for medals.

Boxing became India’s biggest success story at the games. Indian boxers won 10 medals, including seven gold and three silver. More than half of India’s gold medals came from boxing, making it their most successful sport in Glasgow.

Athletics and para athletics also contributed significantly. Indian athletes earned medals in track, field, and para events throughout the competition. Distance runner Gulveer Singh stood out by winning two medals—silver in the men’s 10,000m and bronze in the men’s 5000m. Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and Tejaswin Shankar also won medals in their respective events.

Weightlifting and judo remained strong for India as well. Mirabai Chanu won her third straight gold medal in the women’s 48kg event. In judo, Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh won gold, while Yamini Mourya and Unnati Sharma earned silver and bronze medals respectively.

On the penultimate day of the games, India secured its highest single-day medal haul with 16 medals. This strong performance helped push India into fourth place on the final standings.
