Innovative Transit-Oriented Development in Chennai: Tower with Metro Trains Passing Through

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) is embarking on an innovative project at Thirumangalam station, drawing inspiration from China, to construct a 12-storey tower with a station and platforms on the fourth floor, where trains will pass through the building. This novel concept aims to integrate transit-oriented development with mass rapid transport systems, encouraging increased ridership and revenue generation.

CMRL has initiated preparatory work and plans to engage a consultant to develop a detailed plan for the project, including recommendations for utilizing surrounding land parcels. Additionally, similar transit-oriented developments are planned for other stations across the phase II network, integrating commercial facilities like malls, office spaces, and retail outlets with the metro stations through walkways or skywalks.
