Mexican President Denies US Claims of Political Interference by Mexican Consulates
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has denied claims that Mexican consulates in the United States are interfering in local politics or should be closely examined. She emphasized that, just like other foreign consulates, their role is to protect Mexican citizens abroad.
Her comments came after a news report suggested that the US State Department might investigate Mexican consulates, possibly even closing some, following the deaths of two CIA officers during a counter-narcotics operation in northern Mexico last month.
Sheinbaum stated that Mexico has not received any official notice regarding such an investigation or potential closures. She highlighted that Mexico’s over 50 consulates in the US provide support and protection to Mexican citizens, adhering to international law and diplomatic norms. She also noted that they respect US policies.
