Monsoon Arrives Early in Kerala

The southwest monsoon is expected to arrive in Kerala on May 26 this year, according to the latest forecast released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday. This is slightly earlier than the normal monsoon onset date of June 1, which is usually considered the official beginning of India’s rainy season.

The arrival of the southwest monsoon in Kerala is an important event because it marks the start of the four-month rainy season across the country, which lasts from June to September. After reaching Kerala, the monsoon gradually moves northward, bringing rainfall to different parts of India over the following weeks.

According to the IMD, while May 26 is the most likely date for the monsoon onset, there can be some variation. The monsoon could reach Kerala as early as May 22 or as late as May 30, depending on weather conditions such as wind patterns, sea temperatures, and atmospheric changes.

Last year, the monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 24, which was also earlier than usual. The IMD’s prediction this year suggests a similar trend of an early onset.

An early monsoon is generally seen as positive for agriculture, especially for farmers who depend heavily on seasonal rains for sowing crops like rice, pulses, and sugarcane. Good monsoon rainfall is also crucial for replenishing water reservoirs, supporting hydroelectric power generation, and ensuring water availability across the country.

However, experts note that the arrival date alone does not determine the quality of the monsoon season. The amount, spread, and consistency of rainfall throughout the season are equally important for agriculture and the economy.

The IMD will continue to monitor weather developments closely and provide updated forecasts as the monsoon progresses. Millions of people, particularly farmers, businesses, and policymakers, will be watching carefully as the rainy season approaches.
