Move to Madurai, Not London
Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has criticised Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay over his recent visit to the United Kingdom, questioning whether an overseas trip was necessary to attract investment to Tamil Nadu.
Annamalai argued that the state should give greater attention to industries and businesses already operating in India. He specifically mentioned cities such as Coimbatore and Madurai, saying the government could encourage local companies to expand their businesses and create more jobs.
According to Annamalai, Tamil Nadu should consider providing incentives to existing industries to increase production and investment. He suggested that the government could work directly with local industrialists rather than depending mainly on overseas investment missions.
Annamalai also questioned the economic value of Vijay’s London visit. He referred to the UK’s current economic growth and argued that India itself has a large and growing economy with companies capable of investing in different parts of the country. These comments were part of his criticism of the Chief Minister’s approach to attracting investment.
He suggested that Vijay should visit major industrial centres within Tamil Nadu, including Coimbatore and Madurai, and meet local business groups. Annamalai said the government should encourage sectors such as textiles, automobiles, manufacturing and other industries to expand their operations.
His remarks came after Vijay’s six-day visit to the UK, which was presented by the Tamil Nadu government as an investment mission. The government said the trip resulted in memoranda of understanding and investment commitments worth around ₹15,300 crore, with more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs expected.
Some of the announced commitments include an ₹11,000-crore investment plan from Samvardhana Motherson International, an approximately ₹1,000-crore Global Capability Centre investment linked to Ernst & Young, and a ₹300-crore manufacturing facility planned by Wilson Power Solutions in Tiruvallur. These are commitments or MoUs, so their eventual economic impact will depend on implementation.
Annamalai’s comments are part of a wider political debate over the purpose and outcome of Vijay’s first overseas investment mission. Opposition parties have also questioned aspects of the trip, while the state government has highlighted the investment commitments announced during the visit.
The debate now centres on how Tamil Nadu should attract investment and create employment. While Annamalai is calling for greater focus on domestic industries and Indian cities, the state government has defended overseas investment outreach by pointing to the commitments announced during Vijay’s UK visit.
