Nepal Flash Floods: Death Toll Rises to 1,259; Missing Over 5,000

The death toll from Nepal’s flash floods reached 1,259 on September 3, 2026. The number of missing people also increased sharply to over 5,000 as more bodies were found in the affected areas.

Heavy rainfall continued in the upstream regions of the Bhotekoshi River, raising concerns about new floods in nearby rivers like Trishuli and small streams in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. Authorities warned residents in these areas to stay alert.

Chinese media reported 21 deaths and 541 missing in Tibet due to the August 26 disaster. This brings the total toll to at least 1,280 dead and 5,624 missing across Nepal and Tibet.

Rivers in mountainous districts like Taplejung, Panchthar, Terhathum, and others remain at risk of flash floods. Rescue teams face challenges as floodwaters have erased landmarks and riverbanks, making it hard to navigate with helicopters.

In updates on September 3, officials reported 355 bodies recovered from Chitawan district alone. Other areas, including Nawalparasi East and West, also saw significant recoveries.

Meanwhile, around 100 Nepalese nationals are missing in Tibet after the floods. Over 3,000 Nepalese pilgrims and workers were stranded there, with most returning to Nepal through border points. Some 1,500 remain stuck at the Kerung border, and talks are ongoing for their safe return.
