NIT Silchar Students Protest Following Tragic Student Death

Students at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Silchar, Assam, engaged in protests and a physical altercation with the police after one of their fellow students was found dead in the college hostel. The student, enrolled in the third semester of the electrical engineering course, allegedly took his own life due to academic difficulties and the inability to clear back papers. Students claimed that he had sought permission from the college administration to enroll in the following semester, which was denied.

Emotions ran high as students besieged the Registrar’s official apartment late on Friday night, leading to a police response. Although the situation is currently under control, tensions remain high. The NIT Silchar administration is considering keeping the institution closed until the situation stabilizes. Students expressed anger not only over the tragic incident but also over recent changes in college rules. The police used force to disperse the students during the protest. An emergency meeting was held to address the situation, and the college authorities are looking into the grievances of the students, who have reported issues since the first year.
