Ryan Jeffers and Kody Clemens Lead Twins to 5-4 Win Over Brewers
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ryan Jeffers hit a tiebreaking home run, and Kody Clemens had two doubles and two RBIs as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 on Sunday. The win prevented the Twins from being swept in the three-game series.
Bailey Ober pitched five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Five relievers finished the game, with Luis García securing the final out for his second save. For the Brewers, Garrett Mitchell and Christian Yelich each hit home runs, but their efforts weren’t enough to secure a win after dropping the first two games of the series.
Robert Gasser, recalled from Triple-A Nashville to start the game, lasted four innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits. Jeffers’ solo homer in the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie. The Twins added another run in the eighth when Luke Keaschall tripled and scored on Victor Caratini’s sacrifice fly.
In the ninth inning, Jake Bauers cut Minnesota’s lead to 5-4 with an RBI single, but García closed out the game by getting Sal Frelick to pop out. Clemens’ early doubles helped the Twins build a 3-1 lead before Mitchell and Yelich tied the score.
Yelich returned to the lineup after missing since May 12 due to a strained groin and back stiffness. Twins center fielder Byron Buxton sat out for the fourth straight game with a sore right hip.
The Brewers will face the Chicago Cubs on Monday, with RHP Brandon Sproat starting. The Twins have yet to announce their starter for their upcoming series against Houston.
