Supreme Court Declines ED’s Plea Against High Court Order

The Supreme Court declined to entertain the Enforcement Directorate’s plea challenging a Calcutta High Court order that issued guidelines to probe agencies regarding the disclosure of details related to Rujira Banerjee. The High Court order came in response to a plea by Ms. Banerjee, wife of TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, alleging character assassination and media harassment by central probe agencies.

Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Prashant Kumar Mishra conveyed their disinclination to entertain the plea, stating it was against an interim order. The High Court’s guidelines restrict disclosure of interrogation details and forbid media involvement during raids or interrogations. It also mandates accurate and objective reporting, ensuring the protection of fundamental rights and privacy. The Supreme Court allowed the ED to withdraw its plea, emphasizing adherence to the High Court’s directives until January 15, 2024, or further notice.
