Tamil Nadu Signs MoU with U.K. for Botanical Garden in Chengalpattu and Launches Green Initiatives

In a significant move towards environmental conservation, the State government of Tamil Nadu has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Kingdom to establish a botanical garden in Chengalpattu. The partnership with the prestigious Kew Gardens, London, is set to bring valuable expertise and advice on landscape planning, plant collection development, and botanical garden management.

The botanical garden project aims to promote biodiversity, preserve endangered plant species, and enhance public awareness about the importance of ecological conservation. As part of a broader push for sustainability, the State government has also embarked on green initiatives in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

One of the initiatives, known as the “Tide Turner Plastic Challenge,” focuses on tackling plastic pollution, empowering communities, and driving behavioral changes to reduce plastic waste. Further highlighting their commitment to environmental stewardship, Environment Minister Siva V. Meyyanathan and U.K. Minister of State for Climate, Graham Stuart, jointly launched the ‘Roadmap for Green Indexing of Industries’ in Tamil Nadu.

This roadmap seeks to decarbonize industrial practices, encouraging industries to adopt eco-friendly approaches and reduce carbon emissions. With these concerted efforts, Tamil Nadu aims to create a more sustainable and ecologically responsible future for its citizens and the planet.
