The Rise of Thalapathi Vijay: How Social Media Shapes His Image

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay has emerged as a major political figure after the 2026 Assembly election. His rise has been accompanied by a strong social-media presence, with short videos, reels and other online content playing an important role in shaping how people outside Tamil Nadu view him.

For many young people, Vijay was already a familiar face because of his long career in Tamil cinema. His transition from a popular film star to a political leader has allowed him to carry an established fan base into politics. Social media has further expanded that reach, particularly among younger users who spend significant amounts of time on platforms such as Instagram, YouTube and Facebook.

One example highlighted in recent reporting is the experience of young people from outside Tamil Nadu who have developed an interest in Vijay through viral online content. These users often encounter videos featuring his speeches, public appearances and government activities without necessarily having detailed knowledge of Tamil Nadu politics.

However, not all the content circulating online is necessarily accurate. Reports have found that some viral videos about Vijay have mixed genuine government announcements with exaggerated or false claims. Such videos can receive millions of views and may reach audiences who have little opportunity to independently check the information.

The growth of Vijay-focused social-media pages has also been significant. Reports earlier this year showed a sharp increase in followers for official Tamil Nadu government social-media accounts after Vijay became Chief Minister. His presence has helped bring greater attention to government communication on digital platforms.

Social-media promotion has also extended beyond Tamil Nadu. Reports have described Hindi-language and other regional-language accounts sharing Vijay-related speeches, photographs and videos. Some accounts have promoted his image as a national political figure, including content presenting him as a possible future Prime Minister. Such campaigns should be understood as political messaging rather than evidence of any confirmed national political plan.

Vijay’s supporters and digital networks have therefore created a new way of communicating with young audiences. Instead of relying only on traditional political meetings, speeches and newspaper coverage, political messages can now be delivered through short videos that are repeatedly recommended by social-media algorithms.

At the same time, this approach has raised questions about the difference between political communication and online image-building. A viral video can make a leader appear highly visible and popular, but online engagement does not necessarily represent the views of the entire population.

Vijay’s political journey shows how cinema, fan networks and digital platforms can come together to create a powerful public image. As his government continues in office, the way social media influences public understanding of his leadership will remain an important part of Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
