Woman Accused of Selling Granddaughter in Child Trafficking Case in West Bengal

In a child-trafficking case in West Bengal’s Nadia district, a woman accused of selling her six-day-old granddaughter is currently on the run, according to the police, who are conducting an investigation to apprehend her. The incident came to light on Monday morning when the missing infant’s mother filed a complaint at a local police station in Santipur. The accused grandmother, identified as Khaleda Bibi, is in hiding, along with another woman believed to have acted as an agent to sell the baby.

On October 9, the complainant gave birth, and three days later, she visited her mother’s place with the newborn. According to the complaint, the woman’s mother had been pressuring her to sell the child. On Sunday, when the baby was not found, the woman confronted her mother, who confessed to selling the infant for Rs 60,000 with the help of a local agent.

Before the police could be informed, the accused individuals managed to escape. The woman’s husband works outside West Bengal, and she thought it was wise to go to her mother’s place after giving birth. She acknowledged her mother’s weak financial condition and urged the police to locate her daughter and bring her back, while also demanding punishment for her mother’s actions.
