Women’s Asia Cup: Can India qualify for semi-finals with a win over Hong Kong?

India’s women’s cricket team will face Hong Kong in their next Group A match of the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup in Dubai on Thursday. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, India will be looking for another strong performance after making an impressive start to the tournament.

India opened their campaign with a big 94-run victory over Thailand on Sunday. The win gave the team an important start and helped them build a strong Net Run Rate (NRR) early in the competition.

India scored 159 runs for nine wickets in their 20 overs. The batting performance was not perfect, with several players struggling to score quickly. However, opener Shafali Verma produced an excellent innings and played a major role in India’s total.

Shafali scored 64 runs from just 36 balls, hitting the Thailand bowlers around the ground. Her aggressive batting gave India momentum and helped the team reach a competitive score despite losing wickets at regular intervals.

Thailand struggled badly while chasing the target. The team was bowled out for only 65 runs, giving India a comfortable victory. Nannapat Koncharoenkai was the only Thailand batter to offer much resistance, scoring 41 runs. The other batters failed to build partnerships or stay at the crease for long.

India’s bowlers dominated the second innings. Deepti Sharma was the standout performer, taking three wickets without conceding a run in just 1.1 overs. Her excellent spell put Thailand under immediate pressure.

Nandni Sharma also impressed with the ball, finishing with figures of 3/18. Shree Charani took two wickets for 10 runs, while Kranti Gaud added one wicket for 26 runs. Together, the bowlers made sure Thailand never looked comfortable during the chase.

India will now turn their attention to Hong Kong. While another victory would put them in a strong position, the team will also want to improve its batting. The Indian batters are expected to aim for better partnerships and more consistent scoring in the upcoming match.

The qualification situation is also becoming important. If India wins against both Hong Kong on Thursday and Pakistan on Saturday, they will finish at the top of Group A. This would give them a semi-final against the team that finishes second in Group B.

India could also qualify even if they lose one of their remaining group matches. Four points may be enough to secure a semi-final place, depending on the results of the other teams. India’s current Net Run Rate of +4.700 could also become important if teams finish with the same number of points.

However, losing both remaining matches would make the qualification race much more difficult. India would then have to depend heavily on other results and their Net Run Rate.

India have a strong record in the Women’s Asia Cup. They last won the tournament in 2022, but their title defence ended in disappointment in 2024 when they lost the final to Sri Lanka.

The Indian team will therefore be determined to go further this time. A win against Hong Kong would take them one step closer to the semi-finals and keep their hopes of winning another Asia Cup title alive.
