Delhi University Unveils India’s First Carbon Garden

Delhi University (DU) has launched what it describes as India’s first Carbon Garden at its Department of Botany. The new garden is designed to help reduce air and soil pollution, improve the environment and increase biodiversity in the city.

The garden was inaugurated on Thursday by DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh. During the inauguration, he planted a Kalpavriksha sapling and spoke about the importance of creating more green spaces in urban areas.

Professor Singh also encouraged other departments and colleges under Delhi University to develop similar gardens. He said such initiatives could help create a healthier environment and increase awareness about the role of plants in controlling pollution.

What Makes the Carbon Garden Special?

The Carbon Garden covers around 2,000 square feet of land in front of the Botany Department. It contains about 50 different plant species, including herbs, shrubs and trees.

The garden is not only a collection of plants. DU said it has also been designed as a small biodiversity park where different forms of plant and microbial life can exist together.

The garden contains microorganisms such as algae, fungi and bacteria. It also includes Spirulina and microorganisms found on the bark of trees. These organisms can play an important role in breaking down certain pollutants and gases in the environment.

According to Delhi University, the combination of plants and microorganisms allows the garden to naturally absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants. The plants can also help improve soil health by supporting natural processes within the soil.

Focus on Pollution and Biodiversity

Delhi is known for facing serious air pollution, especially during certain times of the year. Projects such as the Carbon Garden are aimed at exploring natural ways to improve environmental conditions in urban areas.

The garden can also provide a space for different species to grow and interact. This can help support biodiversity, which is important for maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

The initiative also has an educational purpose. Students and researchers from the Botany Department can use the garden to study plants, microorganisms, soil health and their role in reducing pollution.

DU hopes the project will encourage more institutions to develop similar green spaces. If more such gardens are created across the city, they could contribute to a greener environment while also increasing public awareness about environmental protection.
