India’s First Indigenous Micro-GPU Developed by IIT Delhi

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi have developed what they describe as India’s first locally designed micro-Graphics Processing Unit (micro-GPU), marking a significant step towards building indigenous computing technologies.

Graphics Processing Units, commonly known as GPUs, are important components in modern computing. They are widely used for graphics rendering and have become increasingly important for artificial intelligence, machine learning and other applications that require large amounts of parallel computing.

According to the IIT Delhi team, the project has resulted in the first working micro-GPU developed by an Indian university. The researchers designed a custom GPU engine and implemented the architecture using Register Transfer Level (RTL) design techniques.

The micro-GPU was tested on a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platform. FPGA technology allows researchers to test and modify digital hardware designs before they are manufactured as dedicated chips. This provides a practical way to evaluate the performance and functionality of the processor architecture.

The project is aimed at developing affordable and locally designed hardware for applications that do not require the high performance of large commercial GPUs. The researchers said the architecture can provide programmable graphics rendering capabilities for embedded systems.

Potential applications include industrial control displays, human-machine interfaces, e-rickshaw dashboards, fishing boat navigation systems and educational devices. These applications often require reliable graphics and display processing while operating under cost and power limitations.

One of the key features of the design is its scalability. The architecture can be implemented on FPGA platforms and can also be adapted for Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) manufacturing. This flexibility could allow the technology to be used across different types of embedded and visualization systems.

The development also highlights efforts by Indian research institutions to create domestic semiconductor and computing technologies. Reducing dependence on imported hardware is an important objective as demand for computing systems continues to grow across industries.

While the micro-GPU is designed primarily for affordable embedded applications rather than competing directly with high-end GPUs used in advanced AI systems, the project demonstrates the ability to design and implement programmable graphics hardware domestically.

The IIT Delhi development could therefore provide a foundation for future research into more advanced indigenous processors and graphics technologies, particularly for applications where affordability, customization and local hardware development are important.
