16-Year-Old Lawyer-Police Cases Dismissed by Court

The Madras High Court has dismissed all pending cases related to the police
attack on lawyers at the high court campus on Feb 19, 2009, ending a 16-year-old
legal battle between advocates and police.

Justice M Nirmal Kumar said on Thursday, “Whatever the reasons for the actions of
both police and lawyers, a serious incident happened. The blame game is over,
and a long time has passed. It is now time for both sides to move on.”

He added that continuing the cases would serve no purpose and would be a misuse of
the law. “Reopening this old conflict will not help either side. Considering the
statements of witnesses and evidence collected, the cases lead nowhere.
In the interest of justice, the court is quashing the pending proceedings,”
the judge said.
