Indian Railways approves ₹993 crore Arakkonam-Chengalpattu doubling project

Indian Railways has approved a major project to double the railway track between Arakkonam–Chengalpattu railway line, a 68-kilometre stretch that is part of the busy suburban rail network in Chennai. The project will cost around ₹993 crore and aims to improve train movement and reduce delays in one of the most crowded railway corridors in the region.

This railway line is operated by Southern Railway and connects important stations such as Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, and Arakkonam. It is one of the key routes used by daily suburban commuters as well as long-distance and freight trains.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the track expansion will help reduce congestion on the line and improve punctuality of trains. He also said that the project will make train operations smoother and more efficient.

At present, the existing tracks are running at full capacity due to high passenger and freight traffic. With increasing demand expected in the coming years, officials believe that adding more tracks is necessary to handle future growth and avoid frequent delays.

The project will also benefit freight transport. Goods such as cement, food grains, iron, steel, and automobiles will move more quickly between industrial and port areas. This will help reduce transport time and improve supply chain efficiency.

The railway line passes through several important industrial zones, including Mahindra World City, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, and Irungattukottai. These areas are major hubs for manufacturing and exports, making the railway upgrade even more important for economic activity.

Another key factor is the upcoming Parandur Airport near Kancheepuram. The improved rail connectivity is expected to support future passenger and cargo movement linked to the airport.

Officials said the project will not only improve travel for daily commuters but also support industrial growth in the region. It is expected to provide safer, faster, and more reliable train services once completed.
