India’s Stand in WTC After Draw with Sri Lanka

Sonal Dinusha’s strong 133 not out prevented India from earning a full 12 points after he helped Sri Lanka salvage a draw in the second Test in Colombo, which ended on Thursday. Starting day four at 229/6 and leading by 16 runs, it seemed like India was heading for an easy win.

But Dinusha had other plans. Along with Keshara Nuwantha (46), he formed a century partnership worth 112 runs in 242 balls, leading Sri Lanka’s remarkable fightback. India managed to take two wickets—Nuwantha and Prabath Jayasuriya—but the ninth-wicket stand between Lahiru Kumara and Dinusha, totaling 47 runs off 169 deliveries, dashed India’s hopes.

During this partnership, Kumara faced 90 balls (15 overs) for his 12 runs while Dinusha played 80 deliveries for his 30. Sri Lanka ended at 429/9 with no chance of winning, and the match was drawn when the players shook hands. India won the series 1-0 but Sri Lanka showed great determination.

After this draw, India remained in fifth place in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table despite earning four points for the draw. A win would have given them 12 points, but they only got four from this match. Starting the series with a 53.33% point percentage, India dropped slightly to 51.52%.

Australia (80%), South Africa (75%), New Zealand (72.22%), and Bangladesh (55.56%) are ahead of India in the WTC standings. Sri Lanka remains sixth with a 33.33% point percentage.
