PM Modi Meets BRICS Leaders
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a series of important bilateral meetings with leaders from Ethiopia, Malaysia and Vietnam, as well as the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, during the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
Modi’s first meeting was with Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali. The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen the Strategic Partnership between India and Ethiopia. They reviewed progress in several areas, including trade, economic cooperation, defence and security.
Modi also appreciated Ethiopia’s participation in the BRICS Summit. He said Ethiopia’s involvement would help bring stronger representation of the Global South into discussions on major international issues. Both sides expressed interest in expanding cooperation between the two countries.
Later, Modi met Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Their discussions covered a wide range of areas, including trade, investment, defence and cultural relations. The two leaders also discussed the importance of stronger cooperation between India and ASEAN countries.
Malaysia’s support for closer ASEAN-India relations was also highlighted during the meeting. Modi and Anwar agreed to continue working to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Malaysia.
Modi then held discussions with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Minh Hung. He welcomed Vietnam’s participation in the BRICS Summit as a Partner Country. The two sides reviewed the progress of their bilateral relationship and discussed ways to further expand cooperation.
India and Vietnam recently upgraded their relationship to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, reflecting the growing importance of their ties. Vietnam is also an important partner for India’s Act East Policy, which focuses on strengthening India’s relations with Southeast Asian countries.
The meetings gave India an opportunity to strengthen its relationships with important countries in Africa and Southeast Asia. Discussions on trade, investment, defence, security and regional cooperation are expected to support closer ties in the coming years.
The bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit also highlight India’s effort to use the gathering as a platform for wider diplomatic engagement. Through these discussions, India is seeking to deepen partnerships and promote greater cooperation with countries across different regions.
